Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes

It has been a LONG, LONG, LONG wait for U.S. viewers of Downton Abbey to see Season 4 but the wait is almost over!!  Tomorrow, Sunday, January 5th at 9 p.m. (Eastern time) we will finally get to see our favorite characters and how they have faired since Season 3.

When last we saw the residents of Downton Abbey, Lady Mary and Matthew were blissfully happy having just welcomed the newest heir of Downton to the world.  We were introduced to Lady Rose and all of her youthful exploits.  O’Brien was still causing problems – but a little foreshadowing of her future plans were introduced in the “Christmas Special”.  Tom Branson was “cavorting” with a house maid and, of course, Lady Edith was still having issues in the love department.  Poor Lady Edith.  And then of course, who could forget how Season 3 left us?  Poor Matthew was blissfully happy, dreamily driving along when the unthinkable happens and he hits a delivery truck – or a lorry for you U.K. viewers – and he dies on the side of the road.  Oh the horrors!!!  And that was shown on Christmas day, no less.  (I’m not sure I can ever forgive Julian Fellowes for that, even if I didn’t actually see it on Christmas Day like our poor U.K. Downtonians.)

But it is time to put all of that in the past and to find out what happens in Season 4!!! Will Lady Mary ever be able to get over Matthew’s death?  Will O’Brien still be causing problems at Downton?  Will Lady Edith ever find true love?  How are Lord and Lady G handling the death of the beloved Lady Sybil?  Will Tom Branson be able to move on from Sybil’s death?  Will Lady Rose cause more problems at Downton or will she be a breath of fresh air?  Will we ever be able to forgive Dan Stevens for leaving the show and forcing Julian Fellowes to ruin Christmas night for so many people by killing off Matthew???  Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

Tune in tomorrow night to see if all of our questions will be answered.

I will be reviewing each episode of the show, so be sure to look for future posts on all the exploits of the residents of Downton Abbey.

Downton Abbey

Come war and peace, Downton still stands and the Crawleys are still in it for another season!!!  Hooray!!

Just as season four of Downton Abbey is ending, ITV announced that Downton Abbey will be picked up for a fifth season.  Julian Fellowes will return to write the series, which is expected to air next year.

“We promise all the usual highs and lows, romance, drama and comedy,” said Gareth Neame, director of Downton Abbey creators Carnival Films.

It shouldn’t come as a complete shock though.  The latest series has had average viewing figures of 11.8 million.  And 12.3 million Americans tuned in to the finale of season three making it the highest-rated show of the day, and breaking the viewership record for broadcaster PBS.  With numbers like that, the producers would be crazy not to continue Downton Abbey for at least one more season.

I, for one, will go out on a limb and state with no hesitation that I will be watching season five of my beloved Downton Abbey.   Will you do the same?

Brendan Patricks, Downton Abbey, Gareth Neame, Joanne Froggatt, Julian Fellowes, Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery, Tom Cullen

The cast of Downton Abbey has been busy this week.  They journeyed to Los Angeles for a press tour and they were dropping hints at every stop!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~SPOILER ALERT~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is possible this post may contain spoilers so proceed at your own peril.
'Downton Abbey'Actors Michelle Dockery, left, and Joanne Froggatt speak onstage during the “Downton Abbey” TCA panel. (Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images / August 6, 2013)
Here is what we’ve learned so far:
  1. Michelle Dockery was shocked at the death of Matthew Crawley in Season 3.
Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) on the departure of Dan Stevens: “My first reaction was, ‘Oh, crap. What is going to happen?’ Because I thought, ‘Where can this story go now?’ We spent all this time on this will-they-or-won’t they relationships. But as much as it was sad to see Dan go, same as it was sad to see Jessica go, it opens it up for Julian (Fellowes) to write a new chapter.”
2.  The storyline of Season Four picks up during February of 1922 (a few months after Matthew’s death) and ends in Spring 1923.
3.  Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes don’t hook up.
Phyllis Logan On Whether Mrs. Hughes & Mr. Carson Will Finally Get Together: “No, we still have a very nice working relationship. We still have occasional spats here and there. We have a lot of respect for one another, and we occasionally get to drink a glass of sherry together… not as often as I would like.”
4.  Lady Mary and Tom don’t hook up either.
Michelle Dockery On Whether Mary Might Find Love With Her Sister’s Widower, Tom Branson: “They are very much friends and he is her brother-in-law, still. I think they become close because of what they’ve both been through. … And also, Mary becomes far more involved in the running of the estate with Tom, so we do have a lot of scenes together. But romantically, I don’t think it’s going anywhere.”
5.  Lady Edith is going to get be busy in Season Four.
Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith): “(Edith) is the Carrie Bradshaw of the ’20s.”
6.  Lady Mary has a bevy of suitors.
 “There’s a character called Blake, played by Julian Ovenden,” Michelle tells HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site TVLine. ”And Evelyn Napier (played by Brendan Patricks) comes back, as well. He was the one who brought the Turkish diplomat along. That was lovely to play scenes with Brendan again because we haven’t seen him since season one.
Of course, there’s one suitor — Gillingham, played by Tom Cullen – that appears to be leading the pack.
“Gillingham is an old family friend,” Michelle explains. “The sisters knew him when we were growing up, and we haven’t seen him since then. A party is organized at the house, and he is invited to it. He’s just a different character.”
7.  O’Brien leaves the Abbey.  Presumably with Shrimpie and Susan Flintshire on their way to India – it was sort of set up in the Christmas Special, if you remember anything before the final scene of Matthew dying.
8.  Mrs. Patmore gets an electric mixer.  Daisy loves it but Mrs. Patmore isn’t quite sure.
9.  Downton Abbey will be around for a Season Five.
“As far as we know, we’re all doing series five next year,” Michelle Dockery said. “Beyond that, it’s in the hands of [creator] Julian Fellowes and our producers. If other actors start leaving, it would be a worry, but it’s been fine so far.”
“The show is so popular around the world now…. It’s beloved,” said Neame. “The fourth season is extremely good health, and my mind is already in the fifth season. I will say we’re not going to World War II, but that’s 18 years away. We want to make the show. When we feel it’s had its time, hopefully we’ll know before you guys. But it’s not anytime soon.”
Why can’t it be January (or September, depending on where you live) already?!?!?!?!
Allen Leech, Daisy Lewis, Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spoiler Alert ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Haunting: Daisy with Sybil poutRex

Rumors are spreading that Allen Leech’s character, Tom Branson, bereaved husband of Lady Sybil, is out of mourning and moving on.  Apparently, Actress Daisy Lewis will be hired as the governess for Baby Sybil, daughter of Tom and the late Sybil, and sparks will fly with romance quickly following.

Ms. Lewis had 2007 guest appearance in Doctor Who playing Javit and appeared alongside model Agyness Deyn as a drug-addict in the 2011 film Pusher.  She first met Downton creator Julian Fellowes when she appeared in the 2009 film  From Time To Time which he directed.

A source said: “Daisy will become one of Downton’s most prominent characters.  She wowed producers in her audition and they are delighted to have secured such  a brilliant young actress.

“Her romance with Tom will be one of the main storylines of the series. He  will begin to develop feelings for her and they start a secret affair.

“Tom will have an even bigger role in the new series after becoming the  estate manager of Downton.

“The writers know he is a very popular character and the viewers  were gripped by Lady Sybil’s traumatic death.

“In the Christmas special one of the new maids tried to kiss Tom although, at  the time, he wasn’t quite ready to move on.

“But viewers will see that’s all going to change in the new series.”

Things are getting hot and heavy at the Abbey.  Oh my!!!!!!
